I have been thinking about ways to incorporate technology into my students writing. My goal for students is to have them writing daily, weekly, and monthly. I have some routines set up for my classroom and I have been thinking about ways to encourage writing through a digital means. In my classroom I have access to 5 iPads and 3 Chrome-books and a cart of Chrome-books once a week. Obviously I don't have enough devices for every student to have access every day. I know that incorporation technology into writing routines would engage my students further in their writing. However, I want to find the most effective/efficient way to have my students using technology to write. I appreciate your input and ideas about how you use technology to increase writing in your classroom.

Discussion Question: Incorporating Technology In Writing

I know that my wife uses I pads on a rotational basis with her 2nd grade class. They have a writers workshop with an iPad station. She uses QR codes which she prints out. The kids use the app to follow the link to different writing activities in class.
ReplyDeleteIf you set up a class twitter account, you can have them write tweets for you to send out. Lots of resources about using twitter to encourage writers if you google it. My class had to write twitter biographies (3 linked tweets max) and had a blast. Hope that helps a little. Andrew
Erika, I am a huge proponent of using Google Applications for writing in the classroom, and beyond. I have been using GAFE with my third graders for the last few years, but second grade teachers are using them at my school, as well. I love the amount of writing I am seeing, and the development of their peer-editing skills. I started off with limited access too, so used a "center" approach. This past year, the students began using Google Slides to create presentations on self-selected research topics. That's another use for writing with technology. This coming year (next month), I am implementing blogging!
ReplyDeleteErika, however you decide to do it, I would strongly encourage that you do do it. I've never been a supporter of using technology for the sake of technology. but with so many states moving to computer-based standardized assessments, testing a student's knowledge is less important - as these tests first test a student's ability to type.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think that they need to practice writing with any form of technology that they can. You could make it fun through blogging. Or submit it through google docs, etc. I feel like there are so many ways to use technology with writing now a days.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea! I am not totally sure what would be the easiest way to make it happen, but I think giving students a chance to practice with the technology is a great idea.
